GFCI is short for Ground Fault Circuit Interrupter and it is an electrical device designed to protect the end user, YOU. A GFCI is a safety device that, when functioning properly, shuts off power should it detect an imbalance in the flow of electricity. GFCI’s are designed to protect against shock, fires, and overheating. Generally, GFCI protected outlets are found in areas around water or may be prone to moisture, such as the basement, laundry room, or outdoors. When conducting a home inspection, the inspector should test outlets in the various locations to determine if they are GFCI protected and functioning properly, and if not, indicate that in the report. GFCI protection can be provided by either an individual outlet or a circuit breaker located within the distribution panel. If you have any questions or concerns pertaining to GFCI protection please do not hesitate to give me a call, I would be happy to discuss this with you.
